I'll quibble with a couple of these. I don't see how you pick 2/19/71 over 2/18/71. Both are great, but 2/18 is both more historic and has the first Wharf inside a Dark Star sandwich.

I also can't pick 4/16/72 over other shows from that month, like 4/8, 4/24 or 4/26. Bickershaw is an okay pick, but also is not my May '72 fave. Give me 5/3, 5/4, 5/23 or 5/26.

And nothing from '73? Come on.. That's just crazy. And I know he's trying to cover the entire history of the band, but most of those 80s and 90s shows don't belong on a top twenty list. Sorry, that's rubbish.

I would also add that NO WAY would I EVER pick 2/19/71 (or 2/18 for that matter) over the far better choices of 4/28 and 4/29/71. Those April shows are light years ahead of the February shows.

Haha, I was hoping someone would bite! There is surely room for debate, but I just don't see how you can top the highlight-reel performances from those Fillmore shows. 4/28 is so solid, and the one-of-a-kind jams from 4/29 outshine anything from Port Chester.

Snow I completely agree. No picks from 1973 is totally ludicrous. His early era picks are fine, but again, he has one from '66 (which doesn't even show up on the radar compared to other primal years), and two from '67. Three shows form an era when the band was barley consummate and one from their (arguably)most inspired and creative period is pretty unbalanced. But this is Rolling Stone after all, and they are already a joke IMO...

RS may be a joke when it comes to assessing "Great" Grateful Dead shows or their Top 100 "Whatevers" lists....

But Matt Taibbi writes some outstanding articles on what's jacked up in this country.

That's why I continue to subscribe - and they do some other good investigative journalism. This resulted in some major ramifications:

I'm almost okay with most liberals as long as they aren't statists merely jockeying for position to be next in line at the government tit.

Which narrows the list down immensely. (Sorry, couldn't resist....)

Good call Mando. I think Taibbi is the only thing left worth reading in Rolling Stone - regardless of affiliation.

As much as I love the show, it's refreshing to see 5/8/77 did not make the cut. Don't get me wrong I love the show,
and it probably does belong somewhere on a top 20 list. However I think it's a bit overrated and I get tired of it routinely being rated as the #1 show of all time.
